With zero due respect, Jerry Rice is dead wrong here in an interview with Dan Patrick this morning on the subject of Calvin Johnson’s un-score against the Bears. If this call had gone against Rice, there would have been no end to the bitching and moaning we’d have to endure. I love how these players try to change public perception once they make the Hall of Fame. Michael Irvin did it too. Maybe if they do enough charity work (for which a substantial salary is collected), people will simply forget how thoroughly selfish they once were?
This isn’t a rule Rice would have ever had to deal with anyway. This rule was crafted because of one thing…instant replay. You can’t tell me if James Lofton had made this same catch in 1987, with no replay, it would have even been slightly considered not a touchdown. Remember the groundbreaking John Madden classic book One Knee Equals Two Feet? No longer applicable.
