I have to be honest, I was somewhat shocked yesterday morning when I woke up to a multitude of Tweets regarding the impending retirement of Lou Piniella. I have a hard time believing that a guy with the resources Piniella has couldn’t get his mother help and finish a season which only has another 6 weeks left. But I guess it was just time to go. This actually, to me, has the feeling of a firing, but I doubt the Ricketts’ have those kind of cajones…well, maybe the sister.
Also, the Ricketts’ family needs to get a permanent spokesman for the franchise in place. Using Jim Hendry as the ultimate spokesman for the ballclub right now is kinda brainless when Hendry should be looking for a job by Halloween, too. The fact he won’t even contemplate Alan Trammell for the position is odd, to say the very least. Also, the fact he hasn’t handed the job to Ryno yet I think means the team is waiting for the season to end to gauge the potential interest of Joe Girardi and/or Joe Torre and/or Tony LaRussa, as crazy as that last one sounds. LaRussa loves Chicago and there are a million dingy little places he can indulge his not-so-secret alcoholism in relative privacy. We don’t judge things like that here. Hell, I could even show him more than a few.
Lou’s final game went pretty much as expected, halfway decent until the 7th when his cadre of rookie relievers let the game get out of hand to the tune of a 16-5 drubbing. Not a great way to end things, but the only acceptable way to go out would have been to win it all, and we knew that wasn’t gonna happen in January.
So, farewell Sweet, Sweet Lou Piniella. You did a lot of good, and not too much bad, and that seems to be very the definition of a successful Cub tenure for the last century or so. Thanks for the memories.
It’s not that easy being blue.
UPDATE: Now that this video took me 4 hours to put together and upload, MLB claimed the rights (which they have NEVER done before) and won’t show it. Well, terrific. That’s the price of the site getting more popular lately I suppose. I’ll see if TwitVid will allow it. This blows.
