The Hawk is easily my favorite ballplayer of all time. Well, the one who played during my life anyway. Andre Dawson chose the Cubs in a time at which that sort of thing was simply unheard. Sure, a guy like Reggie Jackson chose the Yankees, but that was solely due to the money. Dawson picked the Cubs because of day baseball and natural grass. The money was inconsequential. The Cubs even low-balled him at $500K and he accepted just for the chance play at Wrigley Field. We Cubs fans will never, and I mean never, forget that.
As much as I complain about the new team ownership, giving him the gift of a real #8 from the Wrigley scoreboard is very, very cool. And, it’s not like the Cubs are using that particular digit all that much this season anyway.
Sorry, so much video. It was all so good, I couldn’t cut anything out. Even most of the self-serving Ricketts stuff has to stay. And I’ll be putting up more video tomorrow of the interview after The Stretch where Dawson flat out accuses Barry Bonds of “stealing” two MVP’s from Albert Pujols.
Lots of people carry an item with them which they consider ‘lucky’ and I’m no different. Below is a pic of my ‘lucky’ coin that I was given for Christmas 1987. I carry it every day and it means more to me than ice cream and red wine combined. Although, to be perfectly honest, the pretty much luck wore out years ago.
