This is nonsense. There isn’t anyone who can honestly sit back and say, “yeah, Foghat does a really good job here.” Maybe you like them for what they used to be and still hear a little of that former magic in their voices…maybe…but even then you still have to agree this completely sucks. Hell, it’s borderline disrespectful. Not only to, you know, America…but worse…it was disrespectful to NASCAR fans. This is how little NASCAR really thinks of its biggest fans. NASCAR obviously doesn’t care about the quality of the National Anthem…the pesky honoring of America part…just so long as the artist is cheap and has some passing connection to 70’s Southern rock…even though Foghat is from the UK and Loudon is in New Hampshire. As long as they think you will appreciate the nostalgic aspect, no matter how hamfisted and cheesy, NASCAR will try to shove it down your throat.
And seriously, if you like this, you aren’t even trying anymore.
7/13/10 UPDATE: To be fair, I wanted to move the comment left by current Foghat guitarist Bryan Bassett (formerly of Wild Cherry and Molly Hatchet) to the front page of the post:
Well I will say as proud Americans we did our best and were proud to have the opportunity to display our patriotism. Sorry you didn't like it. Give it a try some time and see how you do ....and give a break to those that do try or you will be listening to a recording in future races. Maybe they should go that way. bryan Foghat
