This is the absolute pinnacle of some sports marketing guy’s career. It doesn’t get any bigger than when a promotion you put together sets a Guinness Book record for something. In this case it’s a world record for the ‘Largest Gathering of People Wearing Fleece Blankets’. I like the guy who brought his own Pistons Snuggie. He’ll look great buried in it.
The Bears finally landed the biggest name in an individual off-season free agency period in the club’s storied history. Julius Peppers, late of the Carolina Panthers signed with Chicago today, just hours after he became officially available. The traditionally stingy Bears gave Peppers a 6yr/$72M deal with approximately $40M over the first three years.
One reason Peppers, a five time Pro Bowler, reportedly was excited to join the Bears was because he believes the team’s defensive scheme suits his skill set, according to former teammate Brentson Buckner. (although the above clip kinda contradicts that)
“Chicago brings a toughness he wants, a classic 4-3 defense.” Buckner said Friday on “The Mully & Hanley Show” on WSCR-AM 670. “I think he wants to show people that he can be a classic 4-3 defensive end, great pass rushing, in one of the toughest divisions out there.”
Also, a professional rivalry with the NFC North’s other standout DE, doesn’t hurt.
“And then he wants, I think personal for him, he wants to show the world that, in the same division as (the Vikings’) Jared Allen, that he is still the premier defensive end in the league,” said Buckner.
Good. Already comes in with a chip on his shoulder about the Vikings. I only hope he feels the same way about Aaron Rodgers. And Brett Favre.
Note to ESPN: Rachel Nichols is 100% NOT an in-studio host. Using her as one is an insult to our/my (admittedly limited) intelligence. Did her mother-in-law Diane Sawyer make that happen, too? (espn)
UPDATE: Check out that smile. Chicago corporations looking for a Bear interested in sponsorship opportunities better get out their checkbooks.
