What the holy hell was he thinking?
In perhaps the stupidest move in NFL history, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick inexplicably went for it on 4th and 2 on his team’s own 28 yard line. The usually reliable Kevin Faulk bobbled the ball, falling just short of the first down, turning the ball over on downs to Peyton Manning and the Colts with 1:57 left on the clock and a scant 29 yards for the go-ahead TD. Of course, Manning found Reggie Wayne to win with :16 left to outscore the Pats 21-10 in the 4th quarter and vaulting the Colts to 9-0.
This was a classic Indianapolis/New England game and easily the most compelling game so far in the 2009 season, but Belichick’s head-scratching call will be forever be remembered and questioned.
“It’s a bummer.” Tom Brady said after the game.
Not if you’re a Colts fan.
