Some of the harshest criticism yet of Bears QB Jay Cutler has been leveled by HOF signal caller extraordinaire and That’s Incredible! host Frantic Fran Tarkenton. (if you remember That’s Incredible!, then you’re officially old)
“I really question whether he can play,” Tarkenton said Friday on “The Waddle and Silvy Show” on ESPN 1000 in Chicago. “Quarterbacks need to make their team better. If it’s a bad team, they can even make a bad team better. Somebody may say well, even Peyton Manning couldn’t help the Bears. Yes, he could. Tom Brady could, too. They might not win the championship or get to the playoffs, but they would make that team better. Those wide receivers who are struggling would be better because they would make them better.”
He goes on & on to say that he basically believes Cutler has a strong arm, but is not an effective leader. Now to be sorta fair, Tarkenton is a fame whore on an otherworldly Sarah Palin type level. He never feels he has gotten fair credit as one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history (which he certainly was) and wants the planet to know it. Remember earlier this year when he inserted himself time and again into the Brett Favre saga?
That being said, he obviously makes some more than valid points. Cutler should probably hope he gets the swine flu before the Eagles visit Soldier Field next Sunday. (espn)
