The new owner of the Chicago Cubs has informed fans that he is a slow moving kinda guy and not to expect significant changes before next season.
“The Ricketts family is going to own this team for generations and so there’s no reason for us to jump in with something that’s splashy and might sound great for the few months but be a mistake,” Tom Ricketts told Reuters TV.
Daniel Snyder probably said stuff like that too when he bought the Redskins. Sometimes, the overwhelming desire to see a better product on the field, combined with the actual power to make that happen, leads to a significant quickening of the pace with these ‘fan-turned-owner’ types. Will Ricketts go the loudmouth, meddling Mark Cuban route, or will he take the Cubs down the staid, solid path of say the Rooney family in Pittsburgh? Only time (and Old Style consumption) will tell.
As for the specter of billy goat’s long since passed, Ricketts pooh-poohed the idea and suggests fans do the same.
“There is no curse. I’m not a believer,” said the son of the founder of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp. “All Cubs fans need to look forward, not backward. Just move on.”
I suppose that’s the right thing to say…but it’s probably not gonna work. We Cub fans have long memories. (espn)
