Now that Booby Valentine (that started off as a typo, but I liked it, so it stays) has made his triumphant return to the US after a pretty successful run as the manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines of the Japanese Pacific League, talk is naturally turning to him taking the helm of the floundering Mets once again. Far be it from Booby (it just might become permanent) to squelch such talk, even though a pro’s pro, Jerry Manuel, currently holds that job.
“I followed it from afar, and I have some friends there that I’ve shared tears with because I think it’s been a tragedy,” Valentine said in a conference call with reporters.
First of all, a major league baseball team underperforming is hardly “tragedy”, and admitting you cried about it isn’t exactly making you look like Joe Torre. But, pretending you’re the single person who cares the most about the success of any given company is usually a pretty good way to get hired. Keep that in mind jobseekers. (Did I just give away my strategy to be hired under the new Cubs regime? Please dismiss that statement Mr. Ricketts.)
No word on if his brother Mario Valentine is eager to rejoin the team as well. (nypost)
