Buried deep inside Saturday’s Chicago Tribune sports section in Paul Sullivan’s ‘Cubs Bits’ is finally the admission most of us in-depth Cubs observers have been waiting for…Kerry Wood has an injured back.
Could the ‘blister’ that mysteriously plagued Wood for the last month and a half be yet another Cubs smokescreen regarding their most infamous and fragile player? Or could this new alleged back problem have surfaced when Wood spent his off night hosting a huge bowling event for his charity, while showing off for his new assumed boss, Mark Cuban?
“He wasn’t available,” Piniella responded. “He was OK, but he wasn’t available.”
After stonewalling the question and turning to another subject, Piniella eventually went back to Wood’s situation.
“Woody’s back was bothering him,” he said reluctantly.
So the blister problem was fine?
“Yeah, it was his back,” Piniella said.
Can Wood pitch Saturday?
“We’ll see when we come to the ballpark,” he said.
Sounds like just more stonewalling bullshit from the Cubs. We never believed the blister story for one second.
On a similar note: Know why you’ll never hear relevant criticism from Cubs’ play-by-play man Len Kasper? That’s him in the foreground acting as MC at Wood’s bowling event.. He’s too close with the players. He’s in their collective pocket, so to speak.
