10 years ago today, the world lost a sportscasting pioneer…and Chicago Cubs fans lost a dear old friend.
Those of us who grew up as Cubs fans in the 70’s will probably remember how leery we were when, after Brickhouse retired in 1981, the Cubs hired a former White Sox & Cardinals (of all teams) announcer to replace our legendary old buddy Jack. That’s no joke. Most Cubs fans despised Brickhouse’s replacement for a couple of years…until 1984 struck.
To us kids, Jack Brickhouse was everybody grampa and the ‘voice of 1970’s summer’.
Even though Jack’s predecessor got more publicity, Brickhouse is a giant piece of Chicago Cubs history and deserves to be equally remembered and celebrated.
Jack Brickhouse (January 24, 1916 – August 6, 1998)
