Last Friday, Mississippi State named the University of Kentucky’s John Cohen as its new head baseball coach. Cohen is a Bulldog alum and jumped at the chance to lead his alma mater from the dugout.
He might want to rethink his new job opportunity.
Legendary outgoing coach Ron Polk (and Cohen’s ex-frickin-coach) seemed a mite less than thrilled at new Athletic Director Greg Byrne’s selection as his replacement, who was chosen over Polk’s handpicked successor Tommy Raffo.
“Now our new athletic director throws me under the bus, slaps me in the face, punches me in the stomach,” Polk said of Byrne.
“Now he’s got me on the war path and all I can do is hurt him.”
Very nice.
Polk, the winningest coach by far in SEC history, who announced his retirement in March, has also demanded his name be removed from the team’s stadium, and he’s writing Mississippi State out of his will.
You can read all of the extraneous details here, but it’s pretty hard to come to any conclusion in which you don’t decide that Ron Polk is completely, old-man, batshit nuts.
“I'm going to do everything I can to make his life miserable.”
Hell hath no fury like a crazy old coach scorned.
He also looks like a smooshed, mini-me version of Lou Piniella.
