The national media really needs to leave the Bartman thing alone for once and for all, although he is so much a part of pop culture these days, it seems he will never, ever have another moment’s peace. This isn’t a story again just because the Cubs are dominating Major League Baseball.
We were at Game 6 and Game 7 of the 2003 NLCS, and have never blamed anyone other than the players on the field for the collapse.
No real Cubs fan has ever blamed Steve Bartman for doing exactly what every other fan in America would do.
In fact, in every photo and video of the play, you see the guy in the grey sweatshirt with the blue stripe lunging after the ball, but juuuust missing. That guy’s name is Patrick Looney, he’s a Chicago Firefighter and owner of the legendary Chicago Irish joint, The Abbey Pub. Can you imagine what would have happened to The Abbey if Looney was the one blamed instead of Bartman? We would have to quaff our Guinness elsewhere, and most definitely nobody wants that.
Why should the gallant Bartman, who declines most interviews and who has not cashed-in on his infamy...to his eternal credit...continue to live in fear due to the mere fact he had a great seat for a huge game?
Alex Gonzalez is the one that true fans blame. That rat bastard. We spit on his grandmother’s grave.
