The Detroit Tigers, in a move designed to shake up the struggling squad, designated 10 year MLB journeyman Jacque Jones for assignment on Monday. Jones was acquired from the Cubs in the offseason and is hitting a paltry .165 on the season.
Pittsburgh’s rookie manager John Russell was Jones’ skipper in 1996 at the Twins Class ‘A’ franchise in the Florida State League, the Ft. Myers Miracle. Since Russell has already given another journeyman player, Doug Mientkiewicz, who was also on that ’96 team a job, Jacque should give Russell a call immediately.
Mark Redman and AJ Pierzynski (also on the ’96 Miracle) better have Russell’s phone number on hand, as well.
