Gary Carter admits he wants Randolph’s job.
Had to put ‘Gary’ instead of just ‘Carter’ in the headline, ‘cause if it just said ‘Carter’, you might be like…‘Carter’, which Carter? Vince Carter? Nell Carter? Nope, she’s dead. Jimmy Carter? OK, must be Jimmy, he can create peace in the Middle East and manage the Mets…oh wait, Gary Carter???...wow, thought he was dead too.
Anyway.
Gary ‘The Kid’ Carter, while managing the Orange County (CA) Flyers, was asked about his interest in potentially taking over for Willie Randolph this week.
“Boy, I’ll tell you what. I would love that, guys. When I saw that on ESPN today…I got on the phone and I called (Mets VP of media relations) Jay Horwitz and I asked Jay, ‘Should I try to call Mr. Wilpon?’ If there is this going on I just want them to know of my availability.”
First, nice loyalty to the guys who sign your current paycheck, dick. Do you have to campaign for another gig while you have 25 or so struggling young men looking exclusively to you for leadership? They wouldn’t resort to playing for the Orange County Flyers if they were any good, so they need YOU to assure them of their place in the baseball universe. You did just that. You told them they don’t matter.
Second, a lot of front office guys (a few of whom read this website, we have been told) are ex-ballplayers, who don’t appreciate their hire (Randolph) getting thrown under thus bus by a manager at the absolute lowest level of pro ball. They aren’t gonna hire some douche like you who has never held a big-league coaching job, just because you want it.
This is the second time you have done this, too. When Art Howe managed the Mets, you openly challenged his job, too. What a penis.
Lead the Flyers to a few championships, then call the Mets and ask if they have a spot for you in Port St. Lucie as a bench coach…and so on, and so on.
You have a Clubhouse Cancer rep in the bigs, Gary. This incident didn’t help.
