The Cubs are finally starting to gel as a team, now that Soriano has decided to try a little, and the last thing they need is an ego-driven outsider upsetting the delicate balance of that fragile clubhouse. The Chicago Tribune is reporting that Cubs GM Jim Hendry is looking at recently released, former adequate centerfielder Jim Edmonds. Hendy likes Edmonds because of his left-handed bat and his potential veteran leadership.
Let’s get one thing straight. Jim Edmonds is a dick. He’s always been a dick and will always be a dick. That ‘tude might fit in well with a band of mercenaries like St. Louis, but the Cubs are developing a scrappy ballclub that derives production 1 thru 25. They do NOT need a struggling old guy to come in and steal centerfield time away from a stud like Reed Johnson, and then complain about the privilege.
Uncle Lou needs to remember that he doesn’t need All-Star stats from every position, at every point during the season. Leave Johnson & Pie alone, for fuck’s sake. They are platooning quite nicely and Pie has even been hitting lately. Why do the Cubs think center is all-or-nothing? Things are just fine the way they are right now.
The Cubs do not need a sullen, washed-up Clubhouse Cancer trying to hang on at the very end of his marginal career. Let the Yankees make that mistake.
